Amazon reportedly confirm James Bond will remain British and male in new works
After purchasing the franchise back in February, leaving the future of James Bond in question, Amazon has now begun to assure devotees of the series and confirmed that the iconic character will remain British and a man.
In February, it was revealed that Amazon MGM Studios reached a new agreement with Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, giving them creative control of the franchise. Exact details of what the deal meant for the character were unknown, but it was announced that Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners of the franchise but Amazon now have full creative control over it.
After the news broke, countless questions were raised about what this would mean for the character. After being on screens for decades now, fans are incredibly protective of the figure, worrying how this new control from a big corporation might affect the character and his legacy.
Amazon seemed to appreciate that. As the deal was announced, Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said, “Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment.”
He added, “We are honoured to continue this treasured heritage and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.” But fans are still worried about how that “next phase” may look and Amazon’s intentions behind it.
However, Amazon MGM Studios has now confirmed that no changes to his gender or nationality will occur. The Daily Mail reported that an internal memo circulated around the company “stipulating the spy will not change gender or nationality.”
So far, the studio has not commented on this news, and no additional details regarding what the deal might mean for the future of the character have been officially revealed.
