Amanda Seyfried and Joe Keery among celebrities calling out ICE after Minnesota shooting
The Housemaid actor Amanda Seyfried and Stranger Things actor Joe Keery are among a growing list of celebrities calling out ICE after a woman was fatally shot by a federal agent.
On January 7th, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was killed in her vehicle by an ICE officer in Minnesota. She was not the target of the ICE operation that was underway, but found herself in the crossfire.
The incident caused uproar all over America, worsened when the president deemed Good “very disorderly, obstructing and resisting,” and insisted she was “shot in self-defense” on Truth Social.
In response, taking to his Instagram Stories, Keery, also known as the musician Djo, shared his dismay at Trump’s lack of empathy for the woman who lost her life. He shared an image of Trump’s Truth Social post and wrote, “Zero human decency. Stop this man.”
Seyfried was also horrified at the incident. She shared a video of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Instagram, which showed the politician addressing ICE agents directly, saying, “Get the fuck out of Minneapolis.”
She added a quote from 1984, the dystopian novel written by George Orwell, which read: “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
Joining her online, Marvel actor Simu Liu also condemned the shooting. “There is a video, and it clearly shows the murder of an unarmed woman driving away. AWAY,” Liu wrote on Instagram. “Immigration laws can be enforced in a dignified way. FUCK ICE forever.”
Meanwhile, Sex and the City actor Cynthia Nixon wrote on social media, “Arrest that ICE agent and charge him with murder.”
Similarly, Mark Ruffalo called for the arrest of the ICE officer who killed Good, writing, “Arrest this murderous thug!”
Star Wars star, Mark Hamill, shared online his view of the incident, writing: “This is not law enforcement. This is murder. Sickening.”
Many celebrities have been sharing footage and news of the incident on their social media, without added commentary. Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon reshared a post on Instagram, which read: “Her name was Renee Nicole Good. She was 37 years old, married, and the mother of a six-year-old son. Her life mattered, and she deserved to be safe and alive today.”
Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers have all delivered condemnations of the killing during their late-night talk shows; Kimmel used his platform to urge ICE to leave Minneapolis.
