Alex G announces new album, ‘Headlights’, and releases new single ‘Afterlife’
Musical pioneer Alex G has announced news of his tenth studio album, Headlights, which will be released on July 18th.
The 32-year-old has announced the new album, which will “revisit the reality-bending terrain that has made him both a beloved artist and an unassuming cultural figure.” The news comes with a taster in the form of the tune ‘Afterlife,’ heralding the magic to come.
As always with Alex G, the lyricism on the new track stands out. The second verse includes the ethereal lines: “A prayer was a baited hook / Scribbled in a history book / Let me run on / In between / Heaven and the TV screen.”
The press release for the album promises a record teeming with symbolism, both new and old. It states: “Maybe more than any record before it, Headlights demonstrates how Alex’s lexicon of symbols and sounds has, over years and albums, grown into something bigger: a musical mythology that is affecting and unmistakable. This record is the perfect reminder that the best way to understand his impact is by listening to the songs.”
Alongside the single, the musician has released a music video, directed by Charlotte Rutherford. It opens in a dance class filled with people of all ages and walks of life. Intermittently, the video lands on a child singing the lyrics into a microphone, dancing to the single. He is dragged through the dance hall and out across depictions of Americana.
Far Out gave Alex G’s performance in London’s The Roundhouse five stars in 2023, writing: “Alex G is his music; his albums contain his entire inner world: his fears, flaws, ambitions – everything. During his generous encore, which included renditions of ‘Bobby’, Forever’ and ‘Brite Boy’, the outside world seemed to dissolve. For 20 minutes, everything was still and pure and good. Below me, 500 people shed their skin in real time.”
Alex will return to the road in support of the new record with a run of shows alongside rising talent Nilüfer Yanya. He will play two shows in the UK this summer, in London and Manchester, for Outbreak Festival, before a lengthy North American tour in September and October.
