Adult DVD share their hatred of horror on new single ‘7 Foot 1’
Perusing the aisles of a bygone video store in search of inspiration for their new single, Leeds dance-rock outfit Adult DVD seem to have skipped the restricted section they take their namesake from, instead opting to tackle their fear of horror movies on new single ‘7 Foot 1’.
A song as large as its title suggests, ‘7 Foot 1’ is characteristic Adult DVD, a swirling mass of synths and pulsing percussion guaranteed to pull even the most reluctant dancers away from the bar queue. As the instrumentation bubbles around him, vocalist Harry Hanson gets candid about his fear of scary movies. “I watched the trailer on the bus before we met up,” he tentatively admits, “I didn’t know it was scary, is this stuff made up?”
The unsettling electronica surrounding his confessions become increasingly anxious, while backing vocals seem to pull him back into fear each time he tries to break out of it. “I said I won’t be long, now I’m seven foot, seven foot one,” Hanson concludes as the soundscape erupts into thrashing drums and swerving synths.
For all his attempts to push through the fear, the Adult DVD frontman reverts back to avoidance each and every time, admitting, “I’ve never seen it and I don’t wanna see it again.” As he comes to the end of his confessions, ‘7 Foot 1’ plunges into alien-like synths more suited to a sci-fi soundtrack than to horror.
Hanson strains his voice in endless attempts to explain himself, before the song concludes with a shrugged, “And that’s a fact.” The frontman is no more forgiving towards the genre in a statement about the new single, shrugging, “I can count the horror films I’ve seen on one hand, not for me. No thanks.”
A pounding and playful revival of indie dance music, ‘7 Foot 1’ feels like a breath of fresh air amidst an increasingly melancholic and monotonous guitar music scene. It’s easy to imagine how the blistering track would fit comfortably into Adult DVD’s live set with their formidable frontman at the helm.
‘7 Foot 1’ marks the lead single from the dance-rock outfit’s upcoming EP, Next Day Shipping, which is set for release this September. Listen to the lead single below.
