
Adan Canto, ‘The Cleaning Lady’ and ‘Designated Survivor’ actor, dead at 42
Mexican-born actor and filmmaker Adan Canto has passed away at the age of 42, following a private battle with appendiceal cancer.
Canto was best known for his most recent high-profile role as Arman Morales in the first two seasons of The Cleaning Lady. Sadly, the star’s deteriorating health left him unable to join the rest of the cast when production on season three started last month.
His first major American role saw him cast in Scream creator Kevin Williamson’s psychological serial killer series The Following, before going on to star in sitcom Mixology, and play Colombian lawyer and politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla in an episode of Netflix’s Narcos. Canto later lent support to Kiefer Sutherland in in political drama Designated Survivor as Chief of Staff turned Vice President-elect Aaron Shore.
On the big screen, Canto was cast as mutant superhero Sunspot in blockbuster comic book sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. He also appeared in Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised, and Mel Gibson-fronted action movie Agent Game among others.
Eying a secondary career behind the camera, Canto wrote, directed, and produced the 2014 short film Before Tomorrow and followed it up with The Shot in 2020.
Following news of his death, Warner Bros Television and Fox released a statement, describing how the companies “were honoured to have him as part of the Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment families since his U.S. debut in The Following more than a decade ago.” Praising Canto for his “artistry, range, depth and vulnerability,” and described him as “a wonderful actor and a dear friend.”
Canto leaves behind his wife Stephanie Ann Canto and their two young children.
