Adam Sandler making new Netflix special directed by Josh Safdie
Netflix have announced that Adam Sandler will be making a new comedy special to be aired on the streaming service and that Josh Safdie, who’s previously worked with Sandler on his dramatic breakthrough in Uncut Gems, will be directing it.
This will be Sandler’s second comedy special and will serve as the follow-up to his 2018 show 100% Fresh. The actor and comedian will reunite with Safdie following their Uncut Gems film, which gave Sandler his first widespread appreciation for dramatic acting.
Sandler is currently under a deal with Netflix, which has seen the former Saturday Night Live cast member release a string of films, including Spaceman, Leo, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Hustle.
It’s stand-up comedy that looks to have been of interest to Sandler, though, and he spent much of 2023 on the road touring his most recent show. It’s a return to the profession that gave the entertainer his first start in show business before gaining his deal with SNL and moving into movies.
Meanwhile, the Safdie brothers recently announced that they are splitting up as creative partners. The siblings had worked together on Uncut Gems, Good Time and Daddy Long Legs.
In an interview with Variety, Benny said of the split, “It’s a natural progression of what we each want to explore”, adding, “I will direct on my own, and I will explore things that I want to explore. I want that freedom right now in my life.”
The Safdies had been said to be reuniting with Sandler on a film taking place in the world of sporting memorabilia, but Benny has ruled himself out of the project and revealed that it is currently on pause.
