Adam Sandler reveals details about ‘Happy Gilmore 2’

Alongside revealing and teasing cast and cameos, Adam Sandler recently unveiled exciting new details about Happy Gilmore 2, the project which will see him return to one of his most iconic movie roles.

In the original movie, Sandler plays the titular character, a temperamental aspiring hockey player who joins a professional golf tour in an attempt to raise money to save his grandma’s house. In the gulf of 1990s comedies, Happy Gilmore has been hailed as one of the best, mainly due to Sandler’s performance and the intriguing addition of the supporting characters.

Sandler recently announced the cast of the forthcoming sequel, which confirmed the return of Benny Safdie. Sandler and Safdie have previously worked together outside of Happy Gilmore, including Safdie’s Uncut Gems and Sandler’s stand-up comedy show Love You.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show, Sandler also revealed that Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce will also feature in the movie, stating, “He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

Within the interview, Sandler added that the movie is scheduled to begin filming in just a couple of weeks, hinting that the long build-up is due to the writers and cast doing everything they can to get it right.

He told Jimmy Fallon: “We’re going to do Happy Gilmore. This is happening. We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple of weeks. It’s good. We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off.”

Fans have also been excited about the return of Christopher McDonald, who plays Gilmore’s rival golfer Shooter McGavin in the original movie. McDonald was one of the first to tease official plans for the movie’s sequel when he revealed back in March that Sandler presented him with its first draft.

Happy Gilmore 2 is set to arrive on Netflix, with an official release date yet to be announced. Last year, the actor earned around £57million due to three movie releases on the platform, including Murder Mystery 2, You Are So Not Invited To My Bah-Mitzvah, and the animated film Leo.

In 2020, Sandler signed a four-movie deal with the platform, reportedly worth $275m. However, despite the broader excitement surrounding Happy Gilmore 2, one beloved aspect will be missing: the addition of Carl Weathers, who passed away earlier this year.

In a heartfelt tribute to the late actor, Sandler said Weathers was an “exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life.”

He continued: “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognised worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
