Actor Peter Mayhew has died, Harrison Ford leads tributes to Chewbacca star


The actor Peter Mayhew, famed for playing the legendary Star Wars Wookie Chewbacca, has sadly died at age 74. A wealth of condolences has flooded in led by his co-star and friend Harrison Ford.

The actor died at his Texan home on April 30th confirmed his family. “He put his heart and soul into the role of Chewbacca and it showed in every frame,” his family said

The London-born Mayhew played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, episode three of the prequels as well as sharing the role in 2015’s The Force Awakens. The actors he shared the screen with have led tributes to the kind-hearted star.

“We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him,” said Ford.

“He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.”

“A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile and a loyal friend who I loved dearly,” co-star Mark Hamill tweeted.
