Academy confirms films using AI can be nominated for an Oscar

The Academy have confirmed that films using AI can be nominated for an Oscar under new rule changes.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued new parameters for its voters on April 22nd, among which it clarified its stance on AI. It said that if generative technology is used in the production of a film, it would “neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.”

However, the organising body added that human involvement would still be considered when deciding which films will win its awards.

Among its other rule changes, the Academy also declared that its members must watch all nominated films before undertaking the final round of voting, which determines the Oscar winners.

It comes as the use of AI has become an increasingly debated topic across the entire entertainment industry. The Brutalist became a critically acclaimed but controversial movie for using the technology to enhance the Hungarian accents of its cast.

Adrien Brody won the award for ‘Best Actor’ for his leading role in the film at the 2025 Oscars in March. Furthermore, it then emerged that Emilia Pérez, which scored Zoe Saldaña the prize for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ also used similar software to enhance the singing in its musical numbers.

AI-enhanced contributions such as these have risen in popularity across the film industry as it is a quick and easy way to implement subtle changes to an actor’s tone of voice, accent, or appearance, but some within the industry worry that it could take an increasingly prominent role and diminish human efforts.

This issue became one of the cornerstones of the 2023 Hollywood strikes as actors and writers feared they could lose work in place of the technology.
