A. Russell Andrews shares “humbling” ALS diagnosis

Better Call Saul actor A. Russell Andrews has announced his Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis, also known as motor neurone disease.

Andrews, who has also appeared in Straight Outta Compton, Insecure, and NCIS: Los Angeles, made the announcement on CNN’s The Story Is during a May 16th episode.

“I am a person living with ALS,” he shared during a special episode of the CNN programme to coincide with ALS awareness month.

The actor, who was diagnosed in late 2025, added, “It’s been humbling, but Elex, there’s also something in the fact that I walked into a family of very caring people I did not know a year ago.”

He then explained how his loved ones have been a strong source of support during this challenging period, “The cliché family, but they have not let us miss a step in terms of care, the attention, the awareness and the ability to get me here today.”

Although his diagnosis has only happened in recent months, Andrews explained that his health struggles date back to the Covid-19 pandemic, including what he previously believed to be a stroke.

Due to being out of work for three years, Andrews lost his insurance and admitted there “were signs that were missed”.

However, his fiancée Erica Tazel, who was by his side for the interview, said the diagnosis “was not a sigh of relief, but some understanding of what was happening.”

Tazel recalled of being told the life-altering news, “I looked at him across the room and I said, ‘At least now we know what it is, and I still want to be your wife’.”

According to the NHS, ALS “causes muscle weakness that gets worse over a few months or years.” They also note, “It’s usually life-shortening and there’s currently no cure, but treatment can help manage the symptoms.”

Sadly, Euphoria actor Eric Dane lost his battle with ALS earlier this year, aged 53. He had only announced last year that he had been diagnosed with ALS after beginning to struggle with symptoms in 2024 and entering full-time care by the end of 2025.
