A new ‘The Office’ series has officially been picked up
Streaming service Peacock has officially picked up a new untitled series set in the same world as The Office. The show will focus on a new group of characters in a new setting and is set to begin production in the summer.
Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the original series of The Office first aired in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. It starred Gervais as David Brent, the manager of Wernham Hogg paper company.
In 2005, Greg Daniels revamped the show for American audiences, replacing Wernham Hogg with Dunder Mifflin. Steve Carell starred as Michael Scott, supported by an ensemble cast made up of John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, B. J. Novak, and Rainn Wilson. The Office US ran for nine seasons, coming to an end in 2013. It has since become one of the most well-loved sit-coms in television history.
Now, over a decade since the final episode of the American version, the original creators are set to collaborate on a new series set in the The Office universe. The untitled mockumentary show will take place in the same world as the original show, but it won’t return Dunder Mifflin or David Brent to our screens.
Instead, the series will new characters to life in a new setting, centred around a failing daily newspaper. An official summary for the series, via Variety, states, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”
Domhnall Gleeson, who previously starred in Ex Machina and appeared as General Armitage Hux in the modern Star Wars trilogy, is set to star in the new show. Sabrina Impacciatore is also attached to the project, after finding success for her role in the second season of HBO’s hotel drama The White Lotus in 2022. Further character and casting details are yet to be revealed.
Behind the scenes, The Office US showrunner Daniels returns to co-create the series with Michael Koman, who has previously worked on comedy shows like Saturday Night Live and Nathan for You. Both Daniels and Koman will also executive produce the show, alongside Gervais and Merchant from the original UK series.
Production on the new show is set to begin this July. No release date has been revealed at this stage.
