The 15-minute cameo that saw Robert De Niro research brain surgery

Hollywood has churned out many famous figures over the years, some more talented than others. There’s no denying that Robert De Niro is one of the industry’s most noteworthy stars, deserving of all the praise he gets. Starting out during the new Hollywood era, the actor appeared in decade-defining movies like The Godfather Part II, Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter.

De Niro has often collaborated with Martin Scorsese, working with him over the course of several decades, most recently starring in his 2023 film Killers of the Flower Moon. Their partnership works so well that it appears as though they operate on the same wavelength. However, De Niro’s success extends to his work with countless other filmmakers, many of whom have heralded the actor’s incredible talents.

With two Academy Award wins to his name, De Niro is Hollywood royalty and was crowned as such near the very beginning of his career. Thus, many filmmakers have longed for him to be in one of their movies, even if that meant just a small role. However, while choosing the cast for his film Brazil, Terry Gilliam actually rejected De Niro’s desire to play one of the main roles, Jack Lint.

The part ended up going to Michael Palin, a fellow member of the Monty Python group, whom Gilliam had promised the role. Still, Gilliam appreciated De Niro’s enthusiasm for the script and subsequently gave him the smaller role of Archibald ‘Harry’ Tuttle.

The character only appears for around 15 minutes out of the film’s lengthy 143-minute runtime. Yet, that didn’t stop De Niro from going into full method-acting mode. The performer is known for often going to extreme lengths to get into character, including significant weight gain and loss, or meeting with one of his own stalkers.

For Brazil, De Niro extensively prepared for his role as a heating engineer, but not in the way you’d expect. The actor didn’t embark on any shifts with real heating engineers – that would be too simple. Instead, he decided to go and observe real brain surgeries after Gilliam told him (via The Guardian), “You’re a plumber, but I want you to treat the plumbing like it’s brain surgery.” De Niro took this on board and embarked on some very intense research.

Gilliam added, “He actually found a New York neurosurgeon and sat in on an operation as part of his preparation, though when you see Tuttle handling equipment in closeup, those hands are mine.”

De Niro might be better remembered for his roles in movies like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, and Goodfellas, but his character in Brazil is a reminder that no matter the size of the part, his commitment to his craft is unwavering.
