Nick Cave performs a touching cover of T-Rex’s ‘Cosmic Dancer’

Nick Cave is a man who knows his way around a cover or two. The singer has long been a fan of adding his own personal style to others’ work and this week Cave gave Marc Bolan and T-Rex’s brilliant ‘Cosmic Dancer’ a touching new take.

The performance came as the last song of a long show in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, as part of Cave’s tour across Europe. It saw the singer take to his piano for much of the show as he shared large chunks of his new record Ghosteen as well as covers and conversation.

The album was a big departure from previous Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ work. It saw the enigmatic Aussie transcend from the murdering troubadour to something truly special, something connecting, something pure. And it’s that sentiment that Cave has been bringing to the stage during his Conversations with Nick Cave tour.

The tour sees Cave open up with the audience, field questions and share even moments of his personal life. It’s been a welcome reprieve during a time when icons can be so fallible and fake that Cave is happy to sit, plain as day, and open himself up to his audience.

To close out his recent performance in Eindhoven the singer decided to not end with one of his own songs, something most artists’ ego would insist upon, but to share a cover of a track that he holds dear to his heart, T-Rex’s classic, ‘Cosmic Dancer’.

Introducing the song, Cave said: “I’m a big T-Rex fan and particularly a Marc Bolan Fan. He is a great lyric writer and a great songwriter. This is my favourite song by him and probably my favourite song ever.”
