Far Out’s Track of the Day for Friday comes courtesy of a new collaboration that brings together the talents of James Hoare of Mazes and Jack Cooper from Veronica Falls. Ultimate Painting will release their debut self-titled single on August 18th. The track showcases a 60s-enthused pop sound perfect for the sweltering temperatures of recent weeks.

Elements of surf-rock are married with a lo-fi guitar track that will no doubt act as an exciting taster for those waiting to hear how the duo’s inaugural LP will shape up. Both members play guitar in their regular bands – something that might been viewed as a possible bone of contention for some upon hearing the news that the two would be joining forces. However, the result is a tapestry of finger picking that reveals more intricacies with every listen.

Some of the greatest disappointments with side projects can come when a pair of gifted songwriters in their own right come together with fruitless consequences, but Ultimate Painting is an example of a meeting of the minds that looks as if it will only be heading into the ascendancy.

The band have yet to embark on a headline tour of their own, but a handful of dates with Parquet Courts and The Wytches in June were met with glowing reviews. Those who can’t wait to see them within more intimate surroundings can catch them at The Castle Hotel in Manchester on August 14th and the Windmill in Brixton on August 17th.
